I started selling on eBay when I was just 16 years old. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to buy and sell on eBay, and it is extremely safe. I can't even remember at I began buying on eBay but I do remember going to the mailbox to retrieve hockey cards I ordered using my mother's eBay account. I was 10 years old when we moved out of the house that I remember having those cards delivered to... My point here is that eBay is the simplest and purest form of a true marketplace. There are plenty of buyers and sellers for absolutely any item you can possibly think of.
We review plenty of drop ship services and wholesale directories than you can use to your advantage - but save these for the future. The first thing I recommend doing is selling all of your unused items on eBay. Anything laying around the house that can be shipped relatively easy and will sell for greater than $5. Once you finish selling all your stuff, check with your family, your friends, your co-workers, everybody and see if they have any items they would like to sell. Offer to sell their items and take a small percentage.
Not only does this give you a great selling experience and build your ability to deal with customers and problems that arise but it will also build your reputation on eBay. Make sure to keep customers happy because your eBay feedback score has a direct correlation with the amount that your items will sell for.
There are two more things you will get from selling these items on eBay that will pay great dividends for your future business. The first is that it will enable you to build start up capital that you will be able to use to purchase products to sell and/or purchase a website to sell them on and marketing services for that site. Having some extra cash available to start your business will help out a lot because you cannot plan on living off the money generated by your home business - at least not right away.
The next thing this experience will give you is an idea of what to sell. Was there any particular thing you sold that you enjoyed listing? Did you know more about one particular item than the rest? Did consumer interest for one item seem higher than the others? These are all questions you should ask yourself when deciding what to sell.
